In December 1998, Jewels' life changed forever when the small truck she was driving was hit by a drunk driver.  She emerged from a four-month coma with traumatic brain injuries that left her unable to move or speak clearly. She was nineteen.  She has required around-the-clock care ever since.  She spends 20-24 hours a day flat on her back, in bed.
Jewels was hospitalized 7 months, during which time she had many surgeries. She has learned to use her right arm and hand to eat, push the buttons on the remote that controls the head and foot of her bed, and pull the chain over her bed that operates the ceiling fan.
Fortunately, the part of her brain that affects intelligence was left unharmed.  In 2010, Jewels and her mother, Mary Lou, discovered her ability to create clever storylines that could become picture books for children! Jewels would dictate each story to her mom who typed them on her computer. She would then have each book illustrated and published -  to help her share her daughter's talent with the world. Her first 4 stories were about a princess and an animal who ends up saving the princess‘ life. Additional stories also deal with animals, as Jewels has always been an animal lover.
Jewels' life story is truly one of making lemonade out of lemons. At first it seemed like she would only be a burden to those around her, accomplishing nothing.  Becoming an author has added purpose and meaning to her life.  She has very strong Christian beliefs and mountain-moving faith.  She knows everything she has been able to accomplish in life is a gift from God.  Sometimes, when bad things happen, it's easy to blame God, but Jewels knows that it was God who saved her after that horrible crash.  She is thankful that the Lord gave her a new beginning. On the Happiness Scale of 1-10,  Jewels and her mom are both 10's.
